In October of last year construction of a sauna was completed in my garage. My wife and I had decided to make donations to a sauna building fund one of the main options for anyone who wished to give us a gift for our wedding a year prior. And now with a little demolition work from us, and a lot of work from some friends of ours in the sauna-building business, we had one of our own.
I grew up on the Iron Range of northeastern Minnesota where sauna culture is wide and robust with so many Finnish and a few Swedish immigrants over the last century and a half. For us the sauna is place of relaxation, a health benefit, and center point of social life within our home.
As soon as the sauna was completed we implemented a variety of traditions attached to our enjoyment, which our friends and family have also taken to with gusto. One in particular has been my public logging of sauna sessions, each one titled "Sauna Time".
The Original Sauna Time Skeet
After this original post I have since quote threaded all subsequent posts, with every subsequent sauna session logged. You can see a basic pattern:
Sauna Temperature in Fahrenheit & Centigrade, with thermometer.
Sauna Humidity Percent, with cloud emoji representing the steam.
External Temperature in Fahrenheit & Centigrade, with emoji that best matches weather conditions.
City, State Location.
This is one of a couple of online bits I enjoy perpetuating. I like this one in particular because it reflects a real life activity. Also as time goes on it will hopefully have a bit of variety as I enjoy sauna sessions beyond just my own home. I've only noticed a couple other people sporadically adopt my bit structure, but who knows maybe that will slowly grow over time.
Sometime soon I plan to follow up this topic with a review of my favorite weather conditions to enjoy a sauna.
